Workshop: Ecology, Restoration, and Management of Hawaiian Stream and Riparian Systems

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center, is sponsoring a workshop addressing the ecology, management, and restoration of Hawaiian stream and riparian ecosystems.  The intent is to bring together agency, organization, and university personnel representing a broad array of disciplines to (a) present the current state of the art and science for restoration of Hawaiian systems, (b) identify gaps in knowledge, (c) improve communication and coordination among interested parties, and (d) develop means by which the restoration and management of these systems can be improved.

Dates:  20-22 May 2008

WORLD OCEAN DAY - Kawaikui Beach clean-up

Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawai’i (B.E.A.C.H.) is organizing an invasive algae beach clean-up at Kawaikui Beach in `Aina Haina in celebration of World Ocean Day. Bags, gloves and water will be provided.  Please bring a bucket and rake (if you have them).  Wear a hat, sunscreen and covered shoes.  All volunteers will be entered into a drawing of prizes.  To volunteer, please register by Fri. 1st annual Race for the Reef

The 2st annual Race for the Reef Paddling Fundraiser will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 25. The race starts at Maunalua Bay and ends at Kaimana Beach. Race divisions are OC1, OC2, surfski, paddleboard and stand-up paddle surfboard. Entry fee is $30, which includes. Cost T-shirt entry deadline is May 15. Dr. Cynthia Hunter, Assistant Professor of Marine Biology at UH Manoa, will discuss the impacts of alien algae on Hawaii’s reefs. 2008 is the International Year of the Reef; let this be your year to learn more about Hawaii’s precious coral reefs!

HAS Program Meetings are sponsored by HAS and the UH Biology Department, and are held at UH Mänoa’s St. John lab building (Botany Building), in room 011 in the ground floor auditorium. The address is 3190 Maile Way. Attendance is free and open to the public.
