NOAA Fisheries is searching for volunteers to assist the small but potentially growing number of critically endangered monk seals that are born and reside in the main Hawaiian Islands.
Scientists estimate only 1,200 Hawaiian monk seals remain and their population is in serious decline.
Volunteers can learn about monk seals and the process to become a monk seal responder by attending one of the following orientations on O‘ahu:
- 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 26, ‘Ewa Beach Library
- 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 28, Waikīkī Aquarium
- 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 29, Kailua Rec Center
- 10 a.m. to noon March 1, Waimea Bay Visitors Center
