U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, Keauhou Outrigger Hotel

The U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, established by Proclamation in 1998, will hold its bi-annual meeting at the Keauhou Outrigger Hotel on the Big Island in August. These meetings are usually attended by the deputy assistant secretaries of the Department of the Interior and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, senior members of federal agencies and government officials. In addition to the business meeting of the CRTF, there will be several workshops and public events celebrating the International Year of the Reef. www.coralreef.gov.



Earth Day Beach Clean-up at Kamilo

Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawai’i (B.E.A.C.H.) is organizing a clean-up of marine debris at Kamilo Beach on the island of Hawai`i, in celebration of Earth Day. Bags, gloves and water will be provided. Please bring a picnic lunch and for cleaning up the beach: a bucket, sand sifter and rake (if you have them). Wear a hat, sunscreen and covered shoes. All volunteers will be entered into a drawing of prizes. To volunteer, please register by Mon. 7th April by phone: 393 2168 or 554 2902.

16th annual Hawai’i Conservation Conference, Hawai’i Convention Center

This annual conference, presented by the Hawai’i Conservation Alliance, is the largest gathering of people actively involved in the protection and management of the natural environment in Hawai’i and the Pacific Region. This theme this year is “Island Ecosystems: The Year of the Reef.” Keynote speaker will be renowned marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earle.  Elliott Norse, President of the Marine Conservation Biology Institute will be the plenary speaker on July 29.  Nainoa Thompson and Dr. Sylvia Earle will be the speakers at the free public lecture on July 30.  More information at:
